Open Enrollment is Here: Is Your Medicare Plan Still Right?

The Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP) runs each year from January 1 through March 31. This is an important time for individuals who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan to make a one-time change if their current coverage no longer meets their needs.
Many people don’t realize until the new year begins that their plan may not be the right fit—perhaps a doctor is no longer in-network, prescriptions cost more than expected, or coverage feels more restrictive than anticipated. OEP provides an opportunity to make a correction.
What You Can Do During OEP
If you are currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you may:
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan
- Disenroll from Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare (Part A & Part B)
- You may also enroll in a Part D prescription drug plan
- You can apply for a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan (medical underwriting may apply unless you qualify for a guaranteed issue right)
Only one change is allowed during this period, and any changes made will take effect the first day of the month following your enrollment request.
What You Cannot Do During OEP
- Enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan if you are currently on Original Medicare
- Make multiple plan changes during this period
Is OEP Right for You?
OEP is designed for people who enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment Period and later realized it may not be the best match for their healthcare needs.
