Special Election Period (SEP)

In Medicare, a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) is a window of time outside of the standard enrollment periods when you can sign up for, change, or drop Medicare coverage due to certain qualifying life events.

Some common reasons you might qualify for an SEP include:

  • Losing other health coverage (such as employer or union insurance)
  • Moving to a new area where your current Medicare plan isn’t available
  • Gaining or losing Medicaid eligibility
  • Your plan stops providing coverage in your area
  • Qualifying for extra help with prescription drug costs
  • The length of an SEP can vary — some last 2 months, others longer, depending on the event. During that time, you can make changes without waiting for the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7).
